KA (100 nm) was added to the culture medium, and the expression and morphology of EGFP-labelled dendrites were examined. We demonstrated that KA induced expression of EGFP in the injected neurons. KA exposure increased the number of EGFP-positive neurons. The KA-induced increase was prevented by addition of glutamine. EGFP-labelled dendrites of KA-induced neurons had a complex structure of spines, particularly the putative postsynaptic density (PSD). No cells expressing EGFP were observed in the normal culture medium, and the distribution of EGFP-positive neurons after KA treatment corresponded well to the distribution of damaged neurons observed in patients.
