Just like any new software, the most important step in AutoCAD’s development is the way users adapt to and interact with the software. This experience might be a little different for each of us.
AutoCAD 2020 release candidates had the most productive beta testing period of any AutoCAD software to date, featuring faster performance, improved drawing behavior and tool functionality, including a brand new 2D canvas and the ability to link and convert projects from earlier versions of AutoCAD.
Starting with the AutoCAD 2019 release, AutoCAD 2020’s development efforts have focused on what users can do with it—and the new capabilities that will enable them to do more.
There is a plethora of features in AutoCAD. Let’s walk through them:
A new User Interface, New Drawing Tools, and a New 2D Canvas
AutoCAD 2020’s user interface is based on the same core elements as the previous version, but there are several new elements too. Here is an overview of the most significant improvements in the AutoCAD 2020 user interface:
New tab in the main menu
The new tab in the main menu enables you to access the new view (including 2D canvas) and reference management features (including a new 2D canvas).
The new 2D canvas is the most significant change to the 2D view, since the 2D view was already a major improvement over the legacy 2D view. You can use the new 2D canvas to view, edit, and annotate drawings from any project or file.
The new 2D canvas has three modes. There is also a fourth mode called template, which is an AutoCAD template for drawings created by other users. A separate article will describe the 4th mode.

The 2D canvas is used to import 2D drawings from other applications or hard drive files. It allows you to place a drawing on the 2D canvas to create a persistent layer, which means you can re-use this drawing in future drawings. This is useful for creating shared designs and for making sure that a drawing is the correct size and will print without distortion on any scale.

Organizational Unit structure
An organizational unit is a container that groups layers and objects. An example of such a container is the City, State, Street and ROW structure.
A shape can be filled with color (Fill-R-2, Fill-M-2, Fill-B-2) or filled with a path that covers the outline (Path-Fill-R-2, Path-Fill-M-2, Path-Fill-B-2).
